Hi Beate
I am very very impressed with the Markus Muhle food, I am more than happy to recomend it to others, especially lurcher owners. As I said I am hoping to breed from 1 of my lurchers this year, I am just awaiting her to come into season, so I will be interested to get advice about feeding this to a litter. It has taken me years to get just the right diet for my dogs, I have tried so many foods over the years. My dogs are rough coated so I cannot say they have shiny coats, but I can say they are doing perfect poops and have just the right amount of energy and look very well on this food. There is also minimal bad smells from them! ha ha

REVIEW OF MARKUS MUEHLE COMPLETE DOG FOOD
Autor Penny Taylor
Magazine: the country man's weekly 29.June 2011
As most readers will know, I feed my dogs on a natural, raw meat and bone diet, so it was with slight reluctance I agreed to do a food trial for Markus Muehle complete food, having been approached by their representative in the UK.
However, I found out a few things about the company which led me to believe that their food could be an acceptable alternative to raw feeding. Markus Muehle is made by a family run company in Germany and they’ve been making dog food for over 40 years, with the aim of producing a food which is as near as possible to feeding raw.
In other words, a meat, fish and egg based diet with the addition of vegetables, herbs and fruits. There is a small content of rice and corn, but no wheat or soya. A small amount of turnip and Jerusalem artichoke is also present for fibre content.
I decided to put my 16 year old terrier and my very allergy prone 8 year old lurcher on to this food for a month. I chose the 16 year old terrier as one of my ‘guinea pigs’ as her digestive system isn’t what it used to be, and although she is in very good health for her age I felt that she would be a good indicator of this food’s digestibility and nutrient content.
I have already documented Littlish’s allergy problems in previous articles: she’s one of those dogs whose skin flares up at the mere touch of any chemical additives or cereals in her diet.
What made me prick up my ears, when first reading about the Markus Muehle food is that it is cold pressed, as opposed to extruded. Extruded complete foods, which make up the bulk of the dog food market, rely on heat treating their products to a very high temperature, (over 100 degrees Celsius for up to 30 minutes) in order to sterilise the food and kill bacteria. The dough, made up of various grains and meat products, is forced through dyes to produce the shapes and nuggets with which most people are familiar. The nuggets are then usually coated with various flavourings and fats to enhance taste and appeal.
One of the problems incurred by treating foods at very high temperatures is that the chemical composition of certain fats and other nutrients is altered. There is evidence to suggest that some fats and oils can actually be rendered toxic if heat treated to over 100 degrees Celsius.
Cold pressing is the compression of the ground up ingredients into bite sized pieces after being pasteurised. Markus Muehle food is cold pressed at only 44 degrees Celsius for less than one second. The fact that the food is not treated to very high temperatures means that the amino acids and other nutrients, which are essential to growth, digestion and good health, have not been destroyed or altered in the process.
I also noticed that the vitamin and mineral supplementation written on the bag’s list of ingredients was considerably lower than those from extruded products. This is because there is simply no need to add large amounts of supplements back into the food, because they haven’t been destroyed in the first place!
I know that this all sounds very rocket science and probably over detailed for people who just want to feed their dogs well, but when I undertake to do anything, I approach the subject with my usual highly analytical approach! I couldn’t be satisfied unless I’d learned as much as possible.
The meat and animal product percentages (human grade products… apart from the tripe) are also reassuringly high, leading me to believe that this really is a product with the dog’s welfare at heart, rather than simply a get-rich-quick food corporation with profit as its only goal.
The percentages are as follows: poultry meal 28%, venison tripe meal 8% and sea fish meal 5%. There is also something called Acticell amongst the ingredients. Acticell is a product made from fruits which have an anti-oxidant effect, thus helping to support good health at a cellular level.
Finally, I found that this food didn’t make my ‘guinea pigs’ want to drink vast quantities of water, something I’ve noticed when feeding dry in the past. Yes, they drank slightly more than if they had been eating raw fresh meat and bones, but nowhere near as much as you’d expect from a dry food.
I also put both dogs straight on to the food without (not recommended) a gradual changeover, and neither suffered any problems whatsoever. Both dogs really liked the food, even Littlish who has a natural aversion to processed foods, probably due to her bad reactions to cereals. She suffered no reaction whatsoever to the food, and indeed looked very well on it.
So, if I was looking for a good complete food would I buy this? Most definitely. I’m committed to my raw feeding methods, which suit both my pocket and my dogs perfectly, but if I only had one or two dogs I’d seriously consider using Markus Muehle as a staple diet if I didn’t have easy access to raw. Sadly, you only get what you pay for in this world, and with my pack, feeding a manufactured food of this calibre would not be a viable option, though this ‘natural as possible’ food is priced to compete with the extruded, meat based brands.
Hallo Beate
Apologies for delay in getting back to you about the samples, which were received safely ....and many thanks for them. The feedback from my two dogs was excellent (they particularly loved the bone, but everything was eaten with relish and enjoyment).
As you know I am an advocate of a natural raw meaty bone diet as the very best food for dogs, but as you also may know I tend to class diets as 'very best' - RMB diets, 'next best' home fresh but cooked diets and 'very good' a group of processed but healthy products, amongst which I will now certainly include the Markus Muehle range in this group of very good foods.
Next time I write an article on good diets for pets, I'll include a mention and some information about Markus Muehle.
Best wishes
Richard

Hi, my local pet shop gave me some samples of Markus-muehle as i was not sure what to feed my 5 yr old terrier mix Nemo and my new puppy thats a boxer x american bulldog called Sherlock. They both loved the food so we went staight back and bought some more.
Nemo was getting quite fat and rather smelly but now is a good weight and doesnt smell the place out and it definatly helps with his skin allergies as he doesn't flair up so much now.
Our now very big puppy is doing very well as seeing a month ago we nearly lost him, he swallowed a toy that blocked his intestines and had to have emergency surgery. He was out the next day and had to have recovery food, but as soon as he went back on MM he was back to his boistrous self, solid poos and no blokages. the vets were astounded by his fast recovery.
I now recommend it to all my friends with dogs and hope more pet shops sell it soon as it can be quite hard to get hold of, but I refuse to feed my dogs anything else.
It is so good my 3yr daughter likes it more than sweets, we have to lock it away and feed the dogs when she's not about or she steals it from under their noses.
Thankyou for bringing it to the uk
Esther, Sherlock and Nemo
I wanted to thank you for the bag of Markus Muehle I won in the competition. My lurcher and greyhound really enjoyed the food.
I have had my greyhound for nine months and since I have had him I have had a problem finding a food that suits him. He has had very loose poo the whole time and I have tried him on a variety of different good quality dog foods and none of them seemed to be any good for him. I had actually given up looking for anymore different foods. I am really delighted that I won that bag of food as finally here is a food that suits him. That was definitely a lucky win as I wouldn't have tried my dogs on it otherwise !

Hi Beate
All my pups are fed on MM adult food ,we have had litters of 11 and 10 ,all pups are big ,well boned and healthy.
My dogs are on MM and raw meat when in periods of heavy training re tracking has the meat is the reward, in winter probably fed more MM as we track less they ARE ALL EXTEREMELY HEALTHY and on the odd visits to vet for vaccinations etc the vet always remarks what super condition they are Incidentally feedback from pup owners always states how healthy and great temperaments the pups are, that is vets opinion
MM is certainly a great food for rearing pups, we have fed our pups on it from about 3 weeks, great results and great health
Keep up good work

Markus Muhle came into my life about 2yrs ago by a very good friend. At that time we had 3x dogs 2x gsd and 1x black labrador whom we said our good byes to Oct 2010 he was 13yrs old. Shadow our lab always suffered from Gastric Torsion of the stomach and he would on many occasions have a very bad turn rolling his body along the floor in pain, this would clear when he was sick. This generally would come on if he had eaten then even after a 10 min walk he would have this attack. We learnt over the years never to excersise him straight after food. When I was introduced to Markus Muhle Shadow was around 11 yrs old, like all labradors he took to this food straight away, we very soon noticed he never had any wind problems, no digestive problems and never had this attack in his last 2x remaining years. Shadow was put to sleep becasue he lost his control to go to the toilet and he had bad arthritus. The toilet mess we could put up with and cleaned him up daily, because he was eating Markus Muhle his stools were easy to pick up and not smelly this made life easier to clean up after him. I strongly feel that his last two years he had been given had helped by his diet and as you can see in his picture he had a lovely coat. We still have our two gsd and they still are on Markus Muhle, we have not, experienced any digestive problems, they keep at a great weight and have good coats. I would recomend this food to any dog owner, I just wished I new about it earlier, Shadow may have been able to run about much more.

''My four dogs love MM food so much I can use it as a training treat. It gets the paw vote.
My dogs love MM because it tastes good. I love it because I know - likethe" best olive oil" - it's cold pressed to lock-in goodness and nutrients.'
Rhonan, feeds Mm to all her 4 dogs
'After years of using premium quality dry food Markus Muehle has completely revolutionised our feeding practices. Apart from top quality ingredients the variation in size of kibble means variety for our dogs to chew and a food which breaks down quickly and easily in the stomach. The pieces of kibble do not swell up during the digestive process. We have deep chested dogs - a breed often prone to Gastric Torsion or Bloat and it is very important to us that our dogs are fed quality food that is easily absorbed. Markus Muehle smells fresh and light. One of our dogs has had serious digestive problems since puppyhood. Now at 3 years old we have found a premium food which he loves and which he eats in comfort. The difference in him is stunning. His poor appetite and bowel problems have become a distant memory. This food has made mealtimes easy and pleasurable instead of a constant worry. I cannot praise this enough.'

The Best Ever Dog Food
I have a German shepherd dog who HAD horrendous digestive problems resulting in food just going straight through him. I had tried almost every food on the market to no avail until I met another German Shepherd dog owner who had experienced the same and was now feeding Markus Muhle.
I had nothing to lose my dog was very poorly, so I tried the food with my dog.
First introduction with the food was that he liked it immediately, so very easy to change to that brand. It was a miracle how he responded so quickly with the food, no more digestive problems at all. I have now been feeding my GSD with Markus Muhle for 3 years, he has a wonderful healthy coat, is a calm and very good natured happy dog. I would never consider ever changing his diet and if I had another dog I would immediately feed it Markus Muhle. This is a wholly natural food that a wild dog would forage. Feeding quantities are small so do not over feed and do not give any other food, your dog will not need anything else to keep him well and happy.
Dear Beate
Imba eats your food from Markus Muehle with enthusiasm and I am so very happy with it. I cannot believe it as before with other foods I was always trying to persuade her to eat and she wasn't really bothered. With your food, she is keen to eat it.
Sylvia

Hi Beate
Thank you for sending me the free samples of dog food, I received them today. When I took the sample bags out of the envelope after I arrived home, I put them on the table and went to let the dogs out, but they weren’t interested in going out they could smell the samples (bags still sealed!) on the table and were jumping up to see what they could smell ! The food does smell and look really nice.
All of the dogs loved the food, so I wondered if you could let me know the prices
James

I own two standard size U.K. Labradoodles and two Australian Miniature Labradoodles, of varying ages from 4 to 12 years old. The dogs dietary requirements differ and so finding a suitable food for all of them to enjoy has been difficult! I have bought some of the various kibble style complete foods for them to try but none of the dogs ever showed any enthusiasm. However, things changed when they tried Markus Muehle! This was over 2 years ago. Although the chunks are bigger and harder than other dog kibble, all of the dogs manage them very well. They actually use their teeth to chew the food and no longer swallow it whole.
The food has natural ingredients and it shows in the dogs.
They are all in the best condition and can’t wait to be fed!
I would recommend it to any dog owner.

Hello Beate
Just to let you know that Inca really loves Markus Muehle kibble she eats it first!! Furthermore she has not lost any condition either for which I am delighted. I hope that I can convert Csella to it once she has eaten her last sack of the old food.
We are spreading the word (and samples) with dog owners here at NATO in Mons and certainly our friend’s dog who hadn’t eaten for 2 days (because of the heat), wolfed it down when he came over the a couple of days ago and he ate it again yesterday, which pleased his owners and they may well be in touch with you to get a source when they return to UK next month.
Thanks again it is a really great food.
Kind regards Helene R.
Our dog is now 3 years old but he came to us as a pup with Campylobacter. The vet I was registered with did not diagnose this for a while so our dog suffered with continual pain, stomach cramps and diarrhea for quite a long time. He has continued to have intermittent IBS symptoms and I'm sure associates food with discomfort so has a very, very poor appetite. Markus Muhle has been a revelation. We have tried almost every type of diet but our poor dog would just sniff it and walk away. To see 'perfect poor's and for him to take a real interest in food is a miracle. No tummy cramps or burping - just a more relaxed dog. Thank you.
Wendy from Kent
Dear Beate
I thought I'd update you with how well we are doing with the Markus Muelhe. Debbie had her first show since starting them on it yesterday, they have also been taking the Lupoderm {which they love, she gives it to them with a syringe and they line up ready with their mouths open!!},
Her dog puppy, Miles, {6 months old} was first in Minor Puppy; and the bitch, Anna, was 2nd in Puppy - the bitch who beat her went on to be Best puppy!! So a wonderful day out :) She says they have a lovely shine to their coats.
All hers are eating it with enthusiasm and doing brilliantly.
I have finally managed to get my wee girls to eat it - for one of them I have to break it into smaller pieces and for the other I have had to resort to soaking it but at least she is eating. They've both been in season recently and went off food completely. I'm hoping once the hormones settle a bit they will eat better.
They all look really good, have lovely coats and do small firm poos.
I hope the trade show went really well and generated lots of interest.
Kind regards
Nicki H.
I just thought I’d let you know that my dogs love your product. I am not feeding it to everything (I have 30 of various breeds and ages) but I am mostly fascinated that my Chinese Crested bitch, who is feeding twelve puppies at the minute, seems to prefer your Acticell chunks to beef and chicken. Amazing but she and the puppies look well so it’s fine by me.
I have mentioned you (with a link) on Facebook and on my websites alongside my usual supplier -
Kind regards and I will be buying more Acticell in the future.
